Chapter 3: Background Supplements

Spicing it Up

The purpose of this chapter and the next, both of which being entirely optional, is to help you flesh out the life and backstory of your character. Within this chapter are a miasma of tables full of details, tidbits, and extraneous life events that can help make your character really stand out, both at the table and in your mind. You can roll on each and every table to give your character an extremely colorful life, or handpick one or two traits from just one or two tables, or anything in-between.

It is important to note that many of these tables ask almost as many questions as they answer – a great many of the results leave a lot of details intentionally vague and do not paint a complete picture on their own. Not only would it be arduous and incredibly difficult to create a result for every possible outcome to every possible situation, but the point of these tables is to inspire and get you to think about and help write your own story, not to do all of the work for you. This chapter is meant to function more like a series of guidelines than a step-by-step complete backstory.

Additionally, you can take each entry literally as it is written, or take it as inspiration and make it your own, putting your own spin and twist on it and using it as a launching point for a completely unique piece of your own story. Whatever the case may be, be sure to have fun!

Class

The following tables can help you figure out how your character became their class, or in other words, how they came upon their particular skillset.

I became an Arcanist because...

8 .

I became an Artificer because...
d6 Origin
1 I’ve always known being an inventor was my true calling.
2 I’ve always had dreams of building beautiful and incredible machines that changed the world.
3 I made small machines as a child, and as I grew, so too did what I built.
4 Growing up and in school, I always spent my time studying the workings of the world and physical forces.
5 By the gods, machines are cool.
6 An experienced Artificer taught me the fundamentals, and recommended I continue my studies out in the world.

I became an Elemancer because...
d8 Origin
1 I was born on the plane of my element and developed my powers as a result.
2 A powerful elemental granted me my powers in exchange for something precious (favors, my soul, a family heirloom, etc.).
3 I was determined to become one, regardless of the cost or what it took.
4 I accidentally swallowed some Aetherite as a kid and got really lucky.
5 After witnessing an Elemancer duel I was enamored with the powers they displayed.
6 After many years of worship, one of the gods visited me – physically or otherwise – and granted me my powers.
7 I gained my powers from a relic I found.
8 Alchemy expirement gone terribly wrong... or terribly right.

I became a Mutant because...
d6 Origin
1 I was raised in a community of Mutants.
2 To slay monsters, one must first become a monster themselves.
3 I was caught in a horrible alchemical accident.
4 I was kidnapped and became one against my will.
5 I craved the enhanced senses, reflexes, and abilities of one.
6 I sook revenge for the death of someone dear to me, and it was the quickest and easiest way to gain the power I needed to do so.

I became a Psychokinetic because...
d6 Origin
1 I discovered my powers at a young age, and have been practicing them ever since.
2 My powers manifested during a moment of desperate need.
3 I was one of a few prodigies who was chosen to be taught by older and wiser Psychokinetics.
4 I realized my powers when I should have been burned/frozen/electrocuted, but wasn’t.
5 A passing Psychokinetic saw me and instantly recognized the potential within me.
6 I hurt someone with my powers accidentally as a child, and have repressed them until now.

I became a Rogue because...
d6 Origin
1 I had to sneak and steal to survive.
2 With my natural agility and quick wit, it seemed only natural.
3 I’d heard tales of legendary assassins and thieves and vowed to become one of them.
4 An experienced Rogue taught me the tricks of the trade from a young age.
5 Direct confrontation was never my style, so I learned to rely on stealth and trickery.
6 I’m not strong enough to swing a hammer or a claymore, but I know my way around a dagger and some poison.

I became a Warrior because...
d6 Origin
1 Tales of legendary heroes fighting epic monsters always enchanted me as a child, and I’ve been dutifully training in the hopes of living up to those legends.
2 I took up the sword to defend my town and have never put it down since.
3 I squired for a knight who taught me their chivalrous ways.
4 I learned to fight from my time in the military, and realized I was a true natural.
5 I was always a tough kid, and kept that going as I grew up.
6 I have a deep-seated rage that must be directed at something or someone, and I will direct it somewhere.
